United Kingdom: Talent is Key
UK law firms show a markedly different pattern of priorities, with one rising well above the rest. Employee development and retention dominate at 41%—significantly higher than any other factor and substantially ahead of the US figure (28%).
Following at some distance are client satisfaction and experience (31%) and marketing and business development (30%)—both ranked as important despite being secondary to workforce concerns. Technology and innovation (26%) and cost optimisation and profitability (26%) receive equal attention, as firms derive operational efficiency from digital advancement.
Brand and reputation building (17%) ranks higher in the UK than in the US. However, an emphasis on expansion and geographical growth was confined to 10% of the firms surveyed.
The emphasis on employee development and retention is indicative of a wider healthy competition for talent among firms, particularly in the UK.
Our Leading Teams and Chambers Student surveys show that, while salary continues to be important, the battle for top talent extends far beyond that. It involves competing on aspects like practice strength, training, career development and working cultures. Prioritising talent pipelines and career growth creates significant competitive advantages for modern law firms.
